Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera is everything you need to bring cinematic film look shooting to the most difficult and remote locations, perfect for documentaries, independent films, photo journalism, music festivals, ENG, protest marches and even war zones.

The digital film camera that's always with you!
The Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera is a true high dynamic range film look camera in an extremely portable size, so now you can shoot cinema quality in situations never before possible. Imagine shooting a documentary, episodic television production, television commercial or independent film in the true quality of digital film. With its extremely compact size, you can covertly shoot important and historic events such as wars, protests and other conflict in cinema quality and get a more realistic record of the event. Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera is a true revolution in how you can shoot digital cinema!

Retain more image detail for more colour grading power
Regular video cameras shoot limited dynamic range, which is why their pictures look like video. Digital cinema cameras have a much wider dynamic range and is the reason why high end television commercials and feature films look so beautiful.

The Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera delivers a true film look because it captures a super wide dynamic range of 13 stops, so your images look truly cinematic. This means you retain all sensor data for DaVinci Resolve colour grading.

The technology of a digital film camera packed into a tiny size
Precision engineered with state of the art technology, the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera takes all the high quality features of a professional digital cinema camera and packs them into an incredibly small size. This premium quality design features a solid magnesium alloy chassis, an MFT mount for interchangeable optics, Super 16 size sensor, 13 stops of dynamic range and high quality ProRes 422 (HQ) and lossless CinemaDNG RAW file formats! Every aspect of the image path has been totally optimized for quality.

Flexible lens mount for all types of quality glass
Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera lets you use the most incredible range of lenses. With the Super 16 size sensor you can use a wide range of adapters for film quality Super 16 lenses, or use commonly available low cost Micro Four Thirds lenses and more. With full electronic control of your lens, you can simply point and set iris all on command! The Micro Four Thirds lens mount also gives you the flexibility to adapt to PL or other lens mounts as required.

Record to SD Cards
Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera features a built in SD card recorder that captures stunning ProRes 422 (HQ) and lossless compressed CinemaDNG files to fast SDXC cards. As an open format, it's compatible with most popular NLE software so you get a digital camera that's perfectly designed for post production workflows. When you’ve finished recording you can easily mount the card straight into a laptop, ready for editing. You can even colour grade direct from the card with the included DaVinci Resolve Lite! SD cards are commonly available and can be formatted for either HFS+ or exFAT, making them compatible with either Mac OS X or Windows.

Open File Format
Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera records into high quality ProRes 422 (HQ) and lossless compressed CinemaDNG files so you retain fine image detail with wide dynamic range for amazing images. This means that Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera is one of the few cameras to support true open file formats, so you're not locked into a strange file format that your editing software can't handle. You get two dynamic range settings, film Log or video REC709, so you can choose the right dynamic range for your project. Using DaVinci Resolve Lite you can color correct files natively or transcode them into a different file format to suit your post production workflow.

Lightweight and incredibly strong
Designed as the world's most compact digital film camera, the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera features a lightweight, elegant design that fits into your pocket. Produced from magnesium alloy for incredible strength, it includes a high resolution LCD for precise focusing and a built in SD recorder, so you get a complete solution without the need to buy expensive accessories. That's vital in such an ultra compact design! With integrated stereo microphones you can also capture great quality sound. The removable rechargeable battery can be swapped quickly, so is perfect when you're on the run.

Crystal clear view of your work
The extremely high resolution 3.5” LCD allows you to monitor while shooting and review recorded files on the SD card. The high resolution screen makes it easy to focus accurately and lets you zoom in to 1:1 size so you focus precisely every time. Camera status displayed at the bottom of the screen shows record status, shutter angle, time lapse interval, aperture setting, ISO, battery level and record time. Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera even includes built in metadata entry.

Professional Connections
The professional connections on the side include a micro HDMI out with optional overlays for easy on set monitoring. You also get a standard mini jack microphone input that's compatible with common AV style microphones, plus a mini jack headphone socket for audio monitoring using headphones. A LANC control input is included for remote operation, and you can power the camera and recharge the removable battery with the 12V DC input.

Pocket Cinema Camera
Advanced hand held design

The Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera combines a range of advanced technologies to create a portable pocket size camera capable of shooting incredible digital film quality images! Each piece of technology used in the development and manufacture of the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera has been chosen for its performance, reliability and innovation. What you get is a breakthrough in camera design that perfectly matches complementing technologies and lets you achieve things that were previously impossible!Technology

13 Stops of Dynamic Range
The dynamic range for a traditional film look!

What makes film look like film? Frame rate, depth of field, noise and other factors are all part of the answer, however all cinematographers agree that Dynamic Range is the major reason. Video cameras are not able to handle light in the same way as film and their narrower dynamic range causes highlights to ‘blow out’ and shadows to appear ‘crushed’. The Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera’s image sensor captures 13 stops of wide dynamic range, so you retain much more detail and get images that emulate film.

Built in SD Card Recording
Record standard ProRes™ and RAW files to SD cards

The Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera features a built in SD card recorder. With the amazingly fast read/write capabilities of SDXC and SDHC cards you can record digital film quality images to a memory card that’s smaller than a postage stamp! The camera creates 12-bit lossless compressed CinemaDNG and 10-bit ProRes 422 (HQ) files that are way beyond broadcast standards! When using ProRes you can record for more than 50 minutes on a  64GB SD card at 24 frames per second and swapping cards takes just seconds!

Use Professional MFT Lenses
Select some of the world's best lens crafters

The shorter flange focal distance of the Micro Four Thirds camera system helps to keep the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera so small, but more importantly this technology also unlocks the use of a huge variety of lenses, especially when combined with the camera’s Super 16 sensor size. In addition to using native MFT lenses it’s easy to adapt other lens mounts to MFT using third party adapters. The active MFT mount is powered so is capable of providing electronic control of focus and iris.

HDMI Output
For great on set monitoring!

You can connect the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera to a huge range of equipment such as electronic viewfinders, monitors and disk recorders, using the camera’s built in HDMI output. The Micro HDMI output uses a small Type D connector and cables with Type D to full size Type A connectors are commonly available at low cost. The camera’s HDMI output includes an overlay setting with frame guides, f-stop, frame  rate and more. The overlay can easily be disabled for a clean video output!

LANC Remote Control
Full control of your camera

The LANC control protocol allows the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera to be controlled remotely by a wired controller. Connection to the camera is via a 2.5mm jack and the controller allows the camera’s record, stop, focus and iris settings to be remotely controlled. LANC remote controllers are typically fitted to tripods and often in situations where the camera is out of reach for direct operation.

Film and Video Gamma
Select film log or video linear gamma

The Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera creates lossless compressed CinemaDNG RAW files and ProRes 422 (HQ) files. You can set the camera to record in Film or Video mode depending on your project requirements. In Film ‘Log’ setting you capture the image sensor’s entire dynamic range, which is perfect for creative color correction. In Video mode, processing in the camera creates a file in REC709 color space for HDTV.

Shoot Digital Film Anywhere!
Get the super compact Super 16 digital film camera that you can take anywhere!

The Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera lets you shoot digital film quality images in virtually any location and for any kind of production. The camera’s handheld design features a built in SD card recorder and removable battery, so you only need to add a lens and you’re ready to shoot. You can easily attach the     camera to vehicle mounts and other camera supports,     including professional camera rigs with follow focus and matte box accessories.

Remote Documentary Pack and take anywhere
If you want to make a documentary in a remote location then one of the major challenges is taking heavy equipment with you. Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera's compact size means you’re agile enough to follow the story wherever it may take you! The camera’s lightweight design fits into your pocket, backpack or bag, and because the camera records to small SD cards and uses a removable battery it’s easy to carry spares so you can keep shooting over long time periods!

Independent Film Tell your story in digital film
Passionate independent film makers can now shoot digital film quality and get the beauty that comes from wide dynamic range and color correction, so their productions truly look like film and not video. The Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera’s MFT lens mount and Super 16 size sensor lets you swap between different lenses for different shots and styles. You can even use incredible distinctive looking Super 16 cine lenses with commonly available adapters to fit the MFT mount. The camera can be used with professional rigs when follow focus, matte box and other accessories are required.

Photo journalism Capture historical events
Bigger cameras can create barriers for journalists, whereas the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera is perfect when you’re    fighting your way through a crowd to find the perfect angle to shoot from, sometimes without being noticed! Use the camera in Video mode to record in Rec709 color space that’s standard for HDTV, and because files use ProRes 422 (HQ) and are saved to SD card, you can move the card to a laptop and access your media within seconds!

Crash Cam Tough camera for tough work!
Crash cams are often used in feature film and television drama production, where cameras are used to film stunts and special effects. These cameras are often mounted in hazardous positions in order to film close up dramatic shots, however this knowingly can cause the camera to be damaged. Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera’s affordable price, size and image quality make it perfect for use as a crash cam.

Small space shooting Mount in tight spaces
There are lots of shooting scenarios where you need to position a camera in a small space, whether that’s due to physical lack of space or a desire to keep the camera small and perhaps hidden completely. The Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera has a 12.5 ounce design with a smaller surface area than many new smartphones, as well as a 2.5mm jack connection for LANC remote control. This is great in situations where you are able to position a camera but not someone to operate it!

Personal Use Shoot your family in digital film
The Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera is a fantastic camera for personal use, especially when you want to achieve quality beyond the level of traditional video camcorders. Film a family wedding, a child’s first steps or a holiday travelogue. If you’re a keen photographer interested in cinematography you may already own MFT lenses or have other lenses that can be adapted to the camera. Operating the camera is simple and within minutes of opening the box you’ll be filming your first projects!

Educational Teach the true art of film!
Students learning the craft of filmmaking can now get to use a digital film camera rather than only learning the theory behind the art. Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera’s ProRes™ 422 (HQ) and lossless compressed CinemaDNG files can be used with DaVinci Resolve Lite, so you can learn how to apply different color correction techniques to create different styles and looks. DaVinci Resolve Lite is free to download, so every student can have their own copy of the software in the classroom and at home!

Small Size, Big Image
Stunning design that makes the Pocket Cinema Camera a professional solution

Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera is a revolution in digital film camera design! Due to their weight and size, large format digital film cameras are only suitable for use with tripods and other camera support equipment. Until now you’ve never been able to carry a digital film camera with you wherever you go! The Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera packs the features and technology of a digital film camera into a truly pocket size design, so you can now shoot film quality images in places and situations that were previously impossible!

Ultra Portable Design
So tiny you can use it anywhere and keep it with you

Every feature of the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera emphasizes its portability! With a surface area smaller than many smartphones and weight of only 12.5 ounces, it’s designed to fit in your pocket and your hand! The built in SD card recorder and removable lithium ion rechargeable battery make it easy to swap your media and power for continuous shooting in remote locations. Plus you can set focus and review your shots using the large LCD screen, without the need for a separate viewfinder or monitor!

Lightweight and Rugged
Features tough cast magnesium chassis

The magnesium alloy chassis is both incredibly light and extremely strong, so you get protection of the camera’s internal electronics in a unit that can be handheld for long periods of time. The design features a grip that adds comfort and stability when shooting handheld. 1/4” thread mounting points are located on the top and bottom of the camera for when you want to mount the camera on a tripod or in a rig, or attach an external microphone or other accessory.

Micro Four Thirds Lens Mount
Quality and compatibility!

The Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera has a Super 16 size sensor, which is the perfect ratio and size for stunning 1920 x 1080 HD images. The active Micro Four Thirds mount provides electronic lens control, helps to keep the camera small in size and importantly lets you use the largest possible range of lenses. You can use native MFT lenses from Olympus, Panasonic, Leica and more, or use commonly available adapters for Canon EF™, Nikon F™, ARRI PL™ or 16mm cine mount lenses.

High Resolution Monitoring
Sharp high resolution screen makes precise focus easy

Incorporating a large 3.5” LCD is a key component of the camera’s overall design. This extremely high resolution display gives a live view of your images, plus lets you play back recorded files and displays the camera’s adjustable settings.

Using such a high quality display lets you set focus easily. Use focus peaking to get a graphical reference of the sharpest parts of your image, plus you can zoom in to 1:1 scale for incredibly accurate focusing.

Professional Connections
Add mic, remote and monitor!

Connecting to the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera is easy, as it uses standard commonly available cables and connectors. The video, audio and remote connections are conveniently located on the same side of the chassis. The micro HDMI output lets you connect to electronic viewfinders, monitors, external disk recorders and more. Stereo audio inputs and outputs use 3.5mm stereo jacks for connecting microphones and headphones. Plus you get a 2.5mm jack connection for LANC remote control and the DC power supply for mains operation and battery charging uses a standard 0.7mm plug.

Removable Battery
When you need to keep shooting, just replace the battery!

The Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera includes a removable and rechargeable lithium ion battery, which provides up to an hour of continuous recording time. The Nikon EL-EN20 battery type is commonly available, so you can purchase multiple batteries if you need to shoot for longer periods. The battery charge time is approximately 1 hour 15 minutes with the camera off. With a wide 12-20V power input range the camera can easily be powered and charged from larger professional camera batteries and other power sources.

What's the minimum I need to add to the BMD PCC to get a usable package for a solo filmmaker on a low budget? What lens would you recommend as a good starting point?
Asked on 08/09/2015 | 1 Answers

Absolute minimum would be a lens and a memory card. We have several of each listed as accessories to the product but for interview type shots you'd want something around the 35mm range and for externals you may need something wider. There is a sigma 18-35mm which would likely be ideal for this sort of range.

The Blackmagic web site states - "When using ProRes you can record for more than 50 minutes on a 64GB SD card" my calculations suggest you'd get rather less than that - 38 mins on a 64GB card. Unfortunately, I can't give you an answer based on actual experience with the camera.

Battery consumption is a well know issue but AMAZING images.

I have little to add to the ecstatic reviews - this does indeed appear to be the best-quality video camera for its price range, and the footage it produces is astonishing. The only annoying downside is that the LCD panel is pretty much useless in bright sunlight, but I bought it almost exclusively to shoot interviews set indoors, so that's not an issue for me personally. Other downsides are that it eats batteries (understandably, given the amount of processing that must be going on inside - it can get quite hot after a continuous shoot), I'd prefer it if the memory card could be removed from the side rather than the bottom, and the files it generates are many times bigger than the compressed ones produced by my DSLR to the extent that I've already been forced to buy another big hard drive just to store the raw footage. But none of that is a surprise, the supplied battery charger doubles as an AC adapter, and in all other respects it's a little miracle - and very very easy to use if you know your way around a camera already.

Now, with movcam rig, it gets very handy.. I also own BMPCC speedbooster.. That way you need only two lenses to cover very wide range ( in combination with classic Nikon->NFT adapter ): Tokina 11-16mm and Sigma 18-35 f1.8..I will shoot RAW, mostly.. This combo is so lighter than BMCC

Most affordable camera with cinematic features! The image is outstanding and compensates easily for some of the features the camera hasn't got yet, like audio meters etc.

What's the minimum I need to add to the BMD PCC to get a usable package for a solo filmmaker on a low budget? What lens would you recommend as a good starting point?

Mr Iain Davidson 08-09-2015

Absolute minimum would be a lens and a memory card. We have several of each listed as accessories to the product but for interview type shots you'd want something around the 35mm range and for externals you may need something wider. There is a sigma 18-35mm which would likely be ideal for this sort of range.

Does the BMDPCC still come with a free fully featured version of Davinci Resolve?

Mick 18-12-2014

From Blackmagic web site:-Software IncludedDaVinci Resolve Lite grading software

What is the longest record time on SD card?

Phil Eastabrook 01-04-2014

The Blackmagic web site states - "When using ProRes you can record for more than 50 minutes on a 64GB SD card" my calculations suggest you'd get rather less than that - 38 mins on a 64GB card. Unfortunately, I can't give you an answer based on actual experience with the camera.

Is there warranty?

Evangelos 21-01-2014

Mr Aidan Smith 19-11-2013

From the manufacturers web site:-"The camera’s HDMI output includes an overlay setting with frame guides, f-stop, frame rate and more. The overlay can easily be disabled for a clean video output"
