Blackmagic PYXIS features a massive full frame sensor with a native resolution of 6048 x 4032. That's almost three times larger than a Super 35 sensor and allows you to shoot with a shallow depth of field or to use anamorphic lenses uncropped for a true cinematic look. Whether you’re shooting in bright sunlight or in almost no light at all, the 13 stops of dynamic range with dual native ISO up to 25,600 provide stunning low noise images in all lighting conditions. Plus you can shoot up to 36 fps at full sensor resolution or 120 fps windowed. Full Frame Flexibility

The large full frame sensor in Blackmagic PYXIS lets you work in a variety of film formats and aspect ratios without sacrificing quality! Using the full area of the sensor gives you a unique open gate 3:2 image which also lets you reframe your shots in post production. The large sensor also lets you work in true 6:5 anamorphic without cropping, making widescreen cinematic images more detailed and in higher resolution than previously possible. You can even use the classic Super 35 sized window on the sensor to create an instant ‘close up’ version of your shot that fits seamlessly with open gate footage. Three Great Models!

With 3 models, you can choose between L-Mount, EF or PL lenses, making Blackmagic PYXIS compatible with the largest range of cinema and photographic lenses in the world! The L-Mount model works with the latest full frame lenses from Leica, Panasonic and Sigma but can also accommodate lens adapters, allowing you to use a wide variety of new and vintage lenses. The EF model lets you use high quality photographic lenses you already own from DSLRs or even Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Cameras. Shoot Incredible High Dynamic Range (HDR) Images

The distance between the lightest and the darkest parts of an image is called dynamic range and is measured in stops. Blackmagic PYXIS has an incredible 13 stops of dynamic range which means it preserves more detail in the lightest and darkest areas of an image than simple video cameras can. This allows you to set exposure for an indoor scene such as a cafe and still retain the details of bright outdoor light coming through a window. You also get more colors than the standard DCI-P3 colorspace used for feature films. Plus DaVinci Resolve Studio is included with the camera, so you get total creative freedom with full exposure adjustment and recovery controls when color grading!

Dual Gain ISO for Exceptional Low Light Performance

In digital film ISO is a measurement of the image sensor’s sensitivity to light. This means the higher the ISO number the more sensitivity to light so it’s possible to shoot using natural light even at night! Blackmagic PYXIS features dual native ISO up to 25,600, which means it’s optimized to minimize grain or noise in images, while maintaining the full dynamic range of the sensor. The native ISO of 400 is ideal for scenes with on-set lighting. The secondary high base ISO of 3200 is perfect when shooting in dimly lit environments. The gain is set automatically as you adjust the ISO setting, so it's easy to capture great images when you don’t have time to set up lights.

Multiple Resolutions and Frame Rates

Blackmagic PYXIS can shoot in all standard resolutions and frame rates from HD up to DCI 4K and even 6K. You can even shoot stills at 24.6 megapixels! Blackmagic PYXIS will shoot up to 36 fps at 6048 x 4032 3:2 open gate or 60 fps at 6048 x 2520 2.4:1 and 60 fps at 4096 x 2160 4K DCI. For higher frame rates you can window the sensor and shoot up to 100 fps at 2112 x 1184 Super 16. You can even work in true anamorphic 6:5 at much higher resolutions than other cameras using anamorphic lenses in 4.8K 24 fps at 4832 x 4032. You can even shoot 120 fps in 1080HD! With Blackmagic PYXIS, you’ll always be able to shoot the right resolution for the job!

Large 4″ LCD Monitor

The built in LCD on Blackmagic PYXIS is more than just a simple status display. It’s a 4″ high resolution HDR touchscreen that is also perfect for monitoring and reviewing shots on set! Its full HD resolution means you can frame and focus your shots without needing to carry around a bulky external monitor! You can even use the display as a focus assist station! Plus, as an HDR display, it has 1500 nits of brightness so you can always see your shot or change settings, even in bright sunlight. On screen overlays show status and record parameters, histograms, levels, frame guides and more. You can even quickly apply 3D LUTs for monitoring shots with the desired color and look.

Blackmagic PYXIS records in Blackmagic RAW to preserve control of detail, exposure and color during post production. It also records HD H.264 proxies in real time making it easy to share media around the world in minutes! Color Temperature

Setting the color temperature tells the camera how to interpret white and other colors in an image. Instead of saving images with color values baked in, Blackmagic RAW makes it possible for you to change the temperature in post production with DaVinci Resolve Studio.

Contrast

Adjusting contrast, or the tonal range of an image, can make different parts of the image stand out. While you should always try to get the best shot on set, Blackmagic RAW gives you the flexibility to adjust contrast without any loss of quality while you’re editing and color correcting.

ISO

Changing the ISO adjusts the camera’s sensitivity to light. Properly exposed shots require the right combination of ISO, aperture and shutter speed. Depending on the lights and exposure settings, you may need to adjust ISO in post.

Tint

Adjusting tint is another way you can affect the overall color balance of an image. Unlike saturation or midpoint which can make reds redder or yellows more yellow, adjusting tint actually lets you push the colors in different directions.

Saturation

Saturation is the strength or purity of a color. More saturated colors are pure and less saturated colors have a percentage of gray in proportion to their hue. Adjusting saturation in Blackmagic RAW images can help make the colors visually pop or become muted.

Exposure

In order for your images to look good, you need to make sure that it’s not too bright (overexposed) or too dark (underexposed). With Blackmagic RAW, the exposure settings can be changed in post so you can save shots that were not properly exposed!

Three Post Production Workflows!

1. Record to Internal Storage

You can record to the internal media or an external USB-C flash disk. This will allow you to browse the clips and let the camera sync your media files to other users globally.

2. Select and Upload Clips

If you're offline, then later when you have internet access you can browse media and manually select which clips you want to upload to Blackmagic Cloud.

3. Record into DaVinci Resolve

Log into Blackmagic Cloud and select a DaVinci Resolve project before recording. After each individual recording the media will automatically upload and sync to all DaVinci users on that project.

Connect 5G or 4G Phones for Mobile Data

When uploading to Blackmagic Cloud, you can use an Apple or Android phone to get a connection to the internet via mobile data. Simply connect the phone to the USB-C port and Blackmagic PYXIS will configure for mobile data. Plus it works with the latest high speed 5G phones, as well as 4G phones! You can also connect via wired Ethernet using the camera’s Ethernet port. This lets you get your media out as you shoot so post production teams anywhere in the world can start work in real time! Plus on set grading can be done in a grading suite and synced back to DaVinci on set. Blackmagic PYXIS supports the optional Blackmagic URSA Cine EVF to make outdoors and handheld shooting accurate and easy! You get an integrated high quality 1920 x 1080 color OLED display with built in proximity sensor, 4 element glass diopter for incredible accuracy with a wide focus adjustment. A built in digital focus chart ensures you get perfect viewfinder focus setup. You can also view critical status information such as frame guides. The URSA Cine EVF is extremely easy to connect as it simply mounts to the included extension arm and connects to the camera using a single USB-C cable. The viewfinder can be positioned in multiple ways and comes with 2 different types of eyecups.

Professional Connections for Custom Rigs!

Blackmagic PYXIS features a wide range of connections for audio, monitoring, power and more. The camera includes a 12G-SDI out for monitoring with support for HDR and Ultra HD output. That means you can connect an SDI display for on set monitoring of images, with or without overlays that show critical information and camera status. SDI allows for much longer cable runs than HDMI making it easier to reach monitors that are further away on set. There’s also a mini XLR connection with 48 volt phantom power for microphones, a 3.5 mm video camera style microphone input, timecode in, reference input, headphone connection and a locking DC power connector!

Built-in Microphones and Professional Audio Inputs

With professional, high fidelity audio recording built in you'll never have to carry around a separate sound recorder again! Blackmagic PYXIS features a mini XLR input with 48 volts of phantom power for connecting professional microphones such as lapel mics and booms. The built in mics have an extremely low noise floor and are shock and wind resistant, capturing great sound and are ideal for recording guide tracks on location. There’s also a 3.5mm audio input for connecting video camera microphones, along with a built in speaker for playback and a 3.5mm headphone jack. These audio connections allow you to record separate audio tracks using microphones, without an external mixer.

Load Custom 3D LUTs to Recreate Film Looks!

Digital film cameras shoot logarithmic colorspace to preserve the dynamic range, which is great for later post production, however when these files are viewed on a monitor they can look flat and washed out. 3D LUTs solve this problem because they allow you to apply a "look" to the monitor so you get an idea of how the finished images will look when editing. LUTs can be applied temporarily for monitoring only, or they can be recorded into the Blackmagic RAW files for use in post production. The Blackmagic PYXIS works with industry standard 17 and 33 point 3D LUT files, or you can work with the built in LUTs such as Extended Video, Film to Video, Film to Rec.2020 and more.

USB-C for External Disks and Ethernet Control

The Blackmagic PYXIS features an innovative and high speed USB-C Expansion Port that operates at up to 5 Gb/s. USB-C is available on most new computers and even provides power. That means you can connect external accessories such as flash drives and high capacity SSDs for significantly longer recording times. Best of all, when shooting is complete you can simply move the external disk to your computer and start editing and color correction from the same disk straight away, eliminating file copying. You can also use the camera’s built in Ethernet port to control your camera over a network via secure and easy to use REST APIs. You can even copy files off the camera via the network!

Built In SRT and RTMP Live Streaming

Now you can live stream from film sets! Blackmagic PYXIS features a built hardware streaming engine that supports RTMP and SRT streaming to YouTube, Facebook, X and more! For internet access, you have two options, one to connect via Ethernet or you can connect a 4G or 5G phone for mobile data! As the streaming is built into the camera, you can see the stream status and data rate in the viewfinder and the LCD! If you want to create a wireless link back to the studio, then you can stream to a Blackmagic ATEM Streaming Bridge, which is an H.264 decoder that converts the video stream back to video. Now the whole post production team can keep an eye on the shoot, live, while it's happening!

Get Multi Camera Shoots in Perfect Sync!

Professional cameras include professional features and you also get a timecode input, allowing shooting with more than one camera while keeping perfect sync! Simply plug in an external timecode generator to the BNC timecode input and the camera will automatically detect timecode and lock the internal generator. Now each camera can start and stop recording and all the shots from all cameras will have the same matched timecode. Imagine shooting a music festival with multiple roving cameras! Best of all, DaVinci Resolve will automatically find and sync the shots from all cameras so you don't need to waste time sorting through thousands of shots!

Shoot Still Frames up to 24.6 Megapixels!

In addition to shooting video, Blackmagic PYXIS can also capture high resolution stills. Simply press the dedicated stills button to record 24.6 megapixel images. Still images are saved as Blackmagic RAW, so you get a very high image quality, which is perfect for making high resolution professional prints or for later editing in DaVinci Resolve. Capturing still images is great for keeping track of continuity between shots or for sharing images to get approval from clients that are not on set.

Localized in 13 Popular Languages

Blackmagic PYXIS is designed to be used worldwide and supports 13 different languages! When setting up your camera, you can choose to work in English, German, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Polish, Russian, Ukrainian, Turkish, Chinese, Japanese or Korean. Heads Up Display Instantly see and adjust the important settings with a single tap!

The heads up display, or HUD, contains critical information such as the frame rate, iris, timecode, cloud and streaming status, shutter angle, white balance, ISO, audio levels and more. You can show or hide the heads up display by simply swiping up or down. For example, you can adjust settings such as white balance simply by touching the WB indicator, or change the audio levels by touching the audio meters. Everything is interactive, so if you tap any item you can instantaneously change its settings without having to search through confusing menus!

Status

The indicators across the top of the screen show various camera settings and they can also be changed, just by touching the specific setting. An easy to use adjustment palette will then be displayed!

Timecode

The timecode indicator will show you the duration of your recording, but it can also show the timecode embedded into the recorded file when selected. Plus, during recording the timecode will turn red.

Blackmagic Cloud Sync

When you record to Blackmagic Cloud the name of your selected project appears above the timecode display. The next time you record a clip it will automatically start uploading to the selected project.

Zebra

The Zebra display will draw diagonal lines over areas of your image that have excessive exposure level. There are eight zebra presets available including middle gray and middle gray plus one stop.

Focus Assist

An extremely powerful feature, focus assist adds a colored highlight to fine image detail, so you can see what parts of the image are in focus. This allows manual focus to be used for cinematic looks.

Frame Guides

Includes aspect ratios for various cinema, TV and online standards. These overlay on the LCD and include 1.85:1, 2.35:1, 2.39:1 and 2.40:1 for theater release. You can also set 9:16 for social media!

Grids

The grid control adds on screen markers for framing and positioning items in a shot. There is a range of on screen markers including a rule of thirds grid, horizon meter, crosshair and a center dot.

Safe Area Guides

Safe area guides let operators ensure important image content does not get too close to the edge of the screen, otherwise it could be cut off when viewed on consumer grade televisions.

False Color

False color overlays colors to represent different exposure values. Pink represents optimum exposure for lighter skin tones, while green is good for darker skin tones, and red is overexposed.

Screen Brightness

Tap the screen brightness icon and drag the slider to the left or right to adjust the brightness of the cameras touchscreen. The adjustment cannot be fully reduced so you will always see the settings!

Frames Per Second

The frames per second adjustment is normally set based on the post production delivery format. You can also create interesting speed effects by setting the sensor rate independent of the camera rate.

Iris

The iris controls the amount of light passing through the lens. By tapping this indicator, you can change the aperture of compatible lenses and even configure auto exposure modes for optimal exposure.

Shutter Angle

Shutter angle lets you adjust for varying light conditions or control the amount of motion blur in your image. You can set it manually or choose from suggested speeds by tapping the indicator.

ISO

ISO adjusts the image sensor’s sensitivity to light. A setting such as ISO 100 is suited to outdoors, with higher values great for low light situations. Tap the gain icon to access the gain settings.

White Balance

White balance lets you adjust your camera to different temperatures of light. There are common presets such as sunlight or fluorescent light, or you can set it manually using a white or gray card.

Stream Information

When live streaming, you can see the connection being used such as Ethernet or a 4G or 5G smartphone. A duration counter shows the duration of your stream and a data rate using megabits per second.

3D LUT Indicator

LUTs let you preview a specific “look” as you are shooting. When in use, a LUT icon is displayed in the top left of the LCD. This icon will be blue if you are embedding a LUT in your recorded clips.

Histogram

The histogram helps check exposure. The left side shows shadows and the far right shows highlights. If the edges of the histogram come to an abrupt stop, adjust exposure to ensure you’re not clipping..

Record Button

The record button lets you stop and start recording. Tap it once to begin recording and tap it again to stop. When recording, the button, media bar icon and timecode at the top of the LCD turn red.

Storage Indicators

The storage indicators show the remaining recording time for CFexpress cards or connected USB-C disks in hours, minutes and seconds. Tap the indicator to access the storage menu for formatting disks.

Audio Meters

You can monitor the recording levels of the internal microphone or external sources using the audio meters. To avoid distortion, peak audio levels should fall in the upper end of the green zone.

Double Tap Zoom

Double tap the LCD to magnify the image. This is useful for checking focus. You can also move the image by dragging your finger around the LCD. To return to normal view, double tap the screen again.

Pinch to Zoom

After double tapping the screen to zoom, you can use a pinch gesture to zoom in up to x8 magnification. To return to standard magnification, simply double tap your camera’s touchscreen again.

Touch to Focus

Touch to focus allows you to focus your lens in any region of the image. Tap and hold the screen in the area you want to auto focus. This function can be combined with the double tap zoom gesture.

Full Screen Mode

When you are framing a shot, overlays such as the histogram and audio meters can be distracting. To hide them, swipe up or down on the LCD. Once you have your shot, repeat swipe action to restore.

Entering Metadata

Blackmagic PYXIS features digital “slate” and incredible metadata features that make it extremely fast to add metadata to any shot! Simply swipe left or right to bring up the digital slate. Plus, if you start and stop recording, you can set to automatically increment the take number so you don’t have to enter them manually for each shot! In addition, lens metadata is automatically detected from electronic lenses or it can be entered manually, along with production specific information, technical information and much more! All of this metadata is saved with the files and available in post production when editing and color correcting with software such as DaVinci Resolve!

The Blackmagic PYXIS dashboard has six tabs with elegant, simple to understand interfaces that give you quick access and complete control over every setting and feature on the camera! Simplified Setup - Quickly check or change recording settings!

The record tab gives you a revolutionary, fast to use interface for selecting the recording format, resolution, frame rate and more! Simply tap on Blackmagic RAW and the appropriate variations such as compression ratios will light up underneath them so you can make your selection and then choose the resolution. The record tab also lets you adjust the dynamic range for film, extended video or video. You can also set the window sensor mode, frame rate, preferred card recording options, time lapse, sharpening level and more!

Flexible Monitoring - Adjust text, overlays and other options for all outputs!

The monitor tab gives you total control over what is displayed on the built in LCD touchscreen and the main HDMI output. Each output can have independent overlays and you can select to send a clean feed, zebra, focus assist, frame guides and more to any or all outputs. You can even set the resolution and choose LUTs for each output! Best of all, you can define different display status text for the cinematographer and the director and then send that information out to the HDMI output, so the right people see the right information!

Professional Audio - Adjust audio input and monitoring settings quickly!

You can quickly adjust audio levels using the interactive HUD, but for complete control over audio settings, you can also use the audio tab on the dashboard. You can change inputs from camera mic to mini XLR, adjust headphone and speaker levels, mic levels, low cut filter and more. When adjusting audio input settings, you can choose whether you want to use mic or line levels independently for channel 1 and 2, turn on 48v of phantom power so you can use microphones that are not self powered, and adjust the gain.

Rapid Camera Setup - The fastest way to setup you camera for new jobs!

Blackmagic PYXIS makes it super fast to get your camera out of the box, set up and ready to go! The setup tab on the dashboard lets you enter the date and time, select the language, shutter measurement, electrical system, battery display, timecode and more. You can even completely customize the behavior of the camera’s 3 external function buttons to trigger presets or toggle certain features on and off! Save and Load Presets - Now you can save different setups for multiple users and jobs!
Different operators like to set up their cameras in different ways. Plus, different shows can require different setups too! With Blackmagic PYXIS, you can create and save 12 custom presets by using the presets tab in the dashboard. Presets can even be saved to CFexpress cards or external drives and then transferred to different cameras, making it fast to set up multiple cameras so they all have the same settings! If you often switch cameras, you can save your own presets to a CFexpress card and load them on any Blackmagic PYXIS on any shoot!

Built in HDR 3D LUTs - Load and apply LUTs to monitor with different color profiles or film looks!

3D color lookup tables (LUTs) are used to adjust the color of the output so the director or cinematographer can see a certain “look” as they’re shooting. LUTs are extremely useful when shooting RAW or when using “film” dynamic range, both of which generally look flat when they’re shot. By using LUTs, the director and cinematographer can get a better idea of what the footage will look like after it has been color corrected in post production with software such as DaVinci Resolve. Blackmagic PYXIS can apply 3D LUTs independently to the LCD touchscreen or the HDMI allowing them to be used for high end feature film work. Blackmagic PYXIS allows you to store up to 10 custom 3D LUTs in the camera. You can even bake the 3D LUT into your footage and record it with your unique look applied!

Blackmagic PYXIS supports recording Blackmagic RAW to CFexpress cards and external USB flash disks. When you select Blackmagic RAW, you get the same files that high end cameras use! Hardware De-Mosaic For Fast File Playback

The new advanced de-mosaic algorithm is a central component of Blackmagic RAW. Part of the RAW processing is moved out of software and into the camera, where it can be accelerated. The partially de‑mosaiced images, along with the unique characteristics of the image sensor, are encoded and saved into the Blackmagic RAW file. Plus noise management, sensor profiling and new edge reconstruction algorithms are used to produce high quality cinematic images with incredible depth, crisp details and beautiful image separation. This results in significantly reduced processing on your computer, making it faster to decode and use the files while retaining the sensor data needed for full RAW control!

Color Temperature

Adjusting the color temperature tells the camera how to set the white point under different lighting conditions. Instead of saving images with RAW settings "burned in", Blackmagic RAW keeps the original images untouched so you can still change the temperature setting later in DaVinci Resolve.

Contrast

Just like on a television, the contrast adjustment affects both the white and dark points of the image and will make the images look harsher or softer. Adding contrast can also be used with gain so you can create gritty looking images, or soften the contrast for more gentle looking images.

ISO

The gain adjustment, or ISO, sets the camera’s sensitivity to light. When combined with aperture and shutter speed, you can pass unclipped sensor dynamic range to downstream color correction. If you need to change the gain value later, simply adjust ISO in DaVinci Resolve's RAW settings.

Tint

Adjusting tint allows you to balance green and magenta in your image to compensate for different types of lighting conditions. LEDs and fluorescent lights are a great way to make creative lighting effects, however they aren’t always color accurate. You can adjust the tint to correct these color casts.

Saturation

Saturation changes the amount of color in the images. Saturation can be adjusted between making images black and white, or up to very strong colors. Changing the saturation setting can even reproduce film looks, or adding lots of color can be great for kids shows that need to be fun and crazy.

Exposure

The exposure setting is often underrated but can be used to create very subtle looks. You can create under exposed or over exposed looks, which are perfect for fashion shoots or music videos. By pushing exposure, the highlights crush in a very soft and elegant way, making for a very creative feel.

Generation 5 Color Science - Accurate skin tones and faithful color reproduction

Blackmagic RAW uses Blackmagic generation 5 color science for reproducing extremely accurate skin tones and gorgeous, lifelike colors. The custom non‑linear 12‑bit space is designed to preserve maximum color data and dynamic range. Constant Bitrate - High quality images and predictable file sizes!

The constant bitrate encoding option is very similar to most codecs that are set to never exceed a specific data rate. The four constant bitrate variations are Blackmagic RAW 3:1, 5:1, 8:1 and 12:1. These ratios are based on the unprocessed file size of a single frame from the camera’s sensor, making it easy to understand the relative amount of compression being used. The constant bitrate variations are designed to give you the best possible images with predictable and consistent file sizes.

The new constant quality options preserve image quality by completely removing the upper data limit. That means complex frames will be encoded at higher data rates to preserve detail and maintain quality. Only constant quality ensures quality levels never suffer. Blackmagic RAW allows working non-destructively with 3D LUTs. 3D LUTs are embedded as metadata within the Blackmagic RAW file, making it easy to display the images with the "look" you want. LUTs can also be stored in the sidecar files that accompany Blackmagic RAW files. LUTs stored in the sidecar file will automatically override embedded LUTs, and if the sidecar file is removed, the embedded LUT will revert to be used again. DaVinci Resolve lets you access these 3D LUTs for editing and color correction, as they travel with the Blackmagic RAW file. DaVinci Resolve can even save color grades as 3D LUTs, so you can build your own 3D LUT files for custom "looks" and endless creative options!
