This Sigma DG lens is a true 1:1 macro model and is a TIPA and EISA award winning design that is suitable for DSLR and film cameras, being compatible with both 35mm and APS-C image formats. When used on a DSLR with and APS-C sized sensor the lens gives the equivalent field of view to a 105mm lens on a 35mm camera.
The Sigma 70mm macro lens uses SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass to reduce chromatic aberration (colour fringing) to very low levels. The lens also features multi Layer lens coatings to reduce ghosting and flare, which complement the supplied screw-in hood. The result of these features is excellent image quality.
This lens has a floating focus system for smooth and accurate focusing from infinity to 1:1 macro. It also has a focus limiter switch which improves focusing speed and accuracy further when the lens is used either for macro or normal distance applications. The settings are 25.7cm to 48cm and 55cm to infinity.
|Lens Construction||10 Elements in 9 Groups|
|Angle of View (for SD1)||34.3 degrees|
|Number of Diaphragm Blades||9 Blades|
|Minimum Focusing Distance||25.7cm / 10.1in.|
|Filter Size||Diameter 62mm|
|Dimensions||Diameter 76mm x Length 95mm / 3.0in. x 3.7in.|
|Weight||525g / 18.5oz.|
This lens has an equivalent field of view of a 105mm telephoto macro lens when used on digital SLR cameras with an APS-C size image sensor. The narrow angle of view is a great aid for simplifying backgrounds and the shallow depth of field aids composition. The greater working distance of this lens is very advantageous when taking pictures of flowers among moving branches or highly sensitive insects.
A Special Low Dispersion (SLD) lens and two high refractive index SLD lenses provide excellent correction for all types of aberration- and produce an exceptional level of optical performance.
Sigma's super multi-layer lens coating reduces flare and ghosting, and helps create a natural colour balance.
The floating focus system provides extremely high optical performance from infinity to 1:1 Macro.
A 'Focus Limiter Switch' is incorporated in the lens, improving the speed and accuracy of autofocus by limiting the focus range between 25.7cm to 48cm and 55cm to infinity.
A screw-in lens hood is included for convenient use of circular polarising filters. A screw-in lens hood (LH620-01) is included and is designed to accept a 77mm lens front cap.
The Sigma Macro 70mm F2.8 EX DG lens has been awarded the prestigious title of TIPA 2007 Best Expert Lens. TIPA said of the lens 'Sigma has used a very simple optical design, but has developed and included two decisive ingredients - a group of floating elements and the new SML multiple surface coating. The result is an excellent macro lens that's purpose-built for D-SLRs with APS-C sized sensors. And there's more: chromatic aberration is absent, distortion and vignetting are invisible, and the optics achieve a 1:1 reproduction ratio at the minimum focusing distance of 25cm. A great reference lens at an affordable price.'
The Sigma Macro 70mm F2.8 EX DG lens was awarded this prestigious title because it is suitable for both macro and portraiture photography, Sigma's 70mm F/2.8 EX DG Macro displays an unusual level of optical quality, whether used at maximum magnification (1:1) or at normal distances. Despite a highly affordable price it combines outstanding sharpness with low distortion and minimal vignetting. It is an excellent choice for the connoisseur, as well as for the eager amateur seeking good value for money.
