Uncompressed Video
Formats such as HDV and DV use video compression for smaller and easier to manage files, however this sacrifices image quality, and in the case of HDV you don't even get full resolution 1920 x 1080 HDTV video. That means HDV is not really HD! Uncompressed video capture with perfect quality video is now easy thanks to modern and fast computer hard disks. Uncompressed video won’t suffer from generation loss and always looks amazingly clean and sharp. Uncompressed video also renders faster as you don’t waste CPU time with video compression. Now 100% of your CPU time can be used rendering your effects!

True HDMI Digital Connections
Intensity features HDMI-in for connecting to cameras and digital set-top boxes for the highest quality capture. Get higher quality capture from HD cameras by capturing direct and bypassing the HDV compression chip for high quality video captured direct from the image sensor. As edit software can't play back to HDV cameras for monitoring, Intensity is ideal to use for monitoring uncompressed HD or HDV, and even DV edits on the latest big screen televisions and video projectors by connecting to the built-in HDMI out.

Go Beyond HDV Video Quality
HDV video compression suffers from not being full 1920 HD resolution, and the extra processing required makes editing difficult. With Intensity, you can now capture and play back full resolution HDTV uncompressed video for true broadcast and feature film quality editing. Totally eliminate HDV & DV compression quality problems, and render much cleaner graphics while retaining deeper color and image detail. If you need lower data rate editing, you can also select from a range of professional compressed video capture modes. Intensity includes the same Blackmagic Design video technology used on Hollywood feature films, so quality won’t limit your creativity.

Live Production with On-Air 2.0
Experience the incredible excitement of filming events live. Included with Intensity is Blackmagic On-Air 2.0, which allows two Intensity boards to be plugged into Apple Mac Pro and Windows systems for live mixing between two HD or SD cameras. On-Air includes everything you need for a live production studio including camera monitoring, program monitoring, graphic keying and recording to disk. Cameras auto sync, so you don't even need expensive genlock featured cameras as any HDV camera with HDMI-out will do. Full resolution live HD production is ideal for weddings, education, corporate production and more. HD has never been so affordable.

Windows and Mac OS X Compatible
Plug into Windows or Mac OS X computers with the same card, and use your favorite software, including Final Cut Pro, Premiere Pro, After Effects, Photoshop, Fusion and many more. Intensity is fully DirectShow and QuickTime compatible, which adds HDMI capture and playback ability to your computer. DirectShow and QuickTime  allows Intensity to work with a wide range of software for editing, design and paint, through to the exciting video utility software that allows custom desktop based video solutions. Blackmagic Media Express is also included for easy capture and playback of real time HD and SD video.

Professional Video Standards
Instantly switch between HD and SD video standards including HDTV 1080i/59.94, 1080i/50, 720p/59.94, 720p/50, NTSC and PAL. Intensity allows capture in professional file formats which are fully compatible with Blackmagic Design’s DeckLink and Multibridge capture cards, so you can deliver finished television programs, music videos and other work at broadcast standards.

Does not properly with my iMac 27 5K in HD. Audio is fine, but no video. I have a support request outstanding with Blackmagic Design. If you had surveyed me after this fault is fixed I would have given a different rating (Excellent).

Once you have it working it's great but I've rarely encountered a device that has such fiddly software.Unless you get the configuration spot on for your capture source and unless the Black Magic is happy with the source you just get a black screen. No help, no suggestions, just black.Likewise if you were hoping to capture from an HDMI device that has protection on it, forget it. I was hoping to transfer some self shot VHS footage via a Panasonic VCR that has an HDMI out. Turns out Panasonic put protection on the HDMI out. Did the Black Magic tell me what was going on? No, it just gave me another blank screen. It also can't do 1080p at 50 or 60fps, a problem if trying to capture HDMI from converters/upscalers that use this format.Infuriatingly poor software design from a device that, when it works, has wonderful capture quality.

Frequently Asked Questions

11 question(s) | 11 answers(s)

Will this card record input from HDMI sources such as Playstation/X-Box 360, and can it record HDMI content from set top receivers?

Romaru 22-07-2011

No, and this is true for other HDMI video capture devices, but not because of a limitation of the capture device itself. HDMI outputs from consumer devices are protected by HDCP (High-Bandwidth Digital Copy Protection); data encryption so that output sent from games consoles as above, Sky HD/Cable TV boxes or Blu-Ray players amongst others is protected.Manufacturers are required to comply with HDCP terms though there are instances of 'fair use' for copyright material but this depends on whether you have copyright privileges on the output (domestic camcorders) or where HDCP is disabled on the device your are using (PS3 or XBox developer boxes).Fair use may also allow you to use analogue A/V connections, but will limit the resolution to PAL/NTSC.

I would like to use the Intensity Shuttle to connect to the composite video output of a 5.8GHz downlink video receiver and to feed that video from the Intensity Shuttle to the USB 3 port on my Sony laptop and then capture

Ian Jones 10-10-2011

Blackmagic Design Intensity Shuttle does support composite video and SD capture. It will require a X58 based motherboard for USB3.0 - ExpressCards on notebooks are not supported. For full support notes and current software drivers please check www.blackmagic-design.com/support

Would this work with a Dell alienware laptop?

Kayla Hubbard 26-10-2011

It will only work on PCs with an X58 based motherboard with onboard USB 3.0 support - check your laptops specification to confirm.

My HP 1004sa laptop has an AMD motherboard but has a USB 3.0 port, will this work?

Patrick bishop 10-11-2011

No. Blackmagic Design currently only qualify Intel X58 chipset based motherboards for USB 3.0.

Would this work with the Intel P8Z68 based motherboards.

Mark Hughes 04-01-2012

The Intensity Shuttle will only support x58 or P55 series motherboard, the Z68 range is not supported.

will this device capture a live feed via camcorder to the internet like the easy cap?

mark harrison 04-01-2012

This will capture a live feed but you need to make sure you have a x58 or P55 series motherboard.

Can you recommend a product for video in/out thst works with windows 7 64bit.

Mark Fletcher 23-04-2012

I would recommend and internal Instensity Pro http://www.creativevideo.co.uk/index.php?t=product/bmd_intensity_pro this gives you basic componant and HDMI in/out.

Will this work to record the HDMI out from something like a Nikon DSLR or GoPro?

James 30-01-2013

Possibly - there are certain things you need to check. Firstly you need to ensure that you are shooting at a resolution and frame rate supported by the Shuttle. Next, you need to check the HDMI out from you cameras. Some cameras don't give a 'clean' output, that is to say that 'viewfinder' information may be superimposed on the image. Also some cameras drop the HDMI output resolution to SD whilst recording, whilst others output a full HD resolution. You don't say which camera models you have so I can't advise. Finally, you need to be aware that the Intensity Shuttle is only qualified to work with certain computers, further details can be found here:-http://www.blackmagicdesign.com/media/3914039/Desktop_Video_Manual_Apr_2012.pdfand here:-http://www.blackmagicdesign.com/support/detail/faqs?sid=3947&pid=4042&os=win

I have a desktop HP Compaq Elite 8300MT with an Intel Q77 express motherboard, is it compatible with Blackmagic Design Intensity Shuttle - USB 3.0 attached HDMI and Analogue Video Editing Solution (BMD-BINTSSHU)?

Matteo 10-12-2013

I want to connect a 10bit second monitor to my system via HDMI so that I can use it as a second screen in Davinci Resolve 10 - for viewing the graded playback, not for GUI. Will this device allow me to stream from Resolve, a 10bit signal from my USB3 connection on my pc to then go in to the monitor via HDMI?

Tom 18-03-2014

This configuration is not supported. "DaVinci Resolve supports the Blackmagic Design range of DeckLink and UltraStudio video I/O devices for SDI video and embedded audio ingest and playback. The same device is used for connecting your grading monitor".Should you choose to go with an UltraStudio solution, note that this device is very particular about the USB3 controller chipset in your computer - "A USB 3.0 port using a Renesas chipset is required if your Blackmagic video hardware connects to the computer via USB 3.0."

Is MacBook Pro 13" Mid 2012 compatible with Blackmagic Intensity Shuttle USB?

Thomas Cave 03-01-2017

It's unlikely it'll work. Better off getting the thunderbolt version which will be fine.
