This 85mm Portrait lens is produced by Carl Zeiss and offers the highest possible image quality for uncompromising performance demands. Featuring a Circular 9-blade aperture, it makes for great bokeh (or softness to defocused image areas). The extra wide f/1.4 maximum aperture allows great levels of control over depth of field.
As would be expected with a Zeiss optic there is virtually no geometric distortion and superb flare control using ultra-precise Zeiss T* coatings and hand-painted black edges to lens elements. This level of attention to detail typifies the Zeiss ethic.
This short telephoto is a classic portrait focal length which is further enhanced by the long barrel rotation for precise control of the focus point in the image. The Planar T* 1,4/85 is optimized for medium to longer distances and provides distortion-free performance, which only improves as the lens is stopped down. The fast f/1.4 aperture is very useful for creatively controlling the depth of field and the nearly circular diaphragm creates a pleasing "bokeh" in the out-of-focus areas. The Planar T* 1,4/85 is available with the F bayonet (ZF), EF bayonet (ZE) and K bayonet (ZK) lens mounts and is designed for use with full-frame SLR and DSLR cameras. Combined with a DSLR with a 1.5 crop factor, the lens becomes one with a a focal length of effectively 128 mm.

Elaborate stray light reduction
Rich, vibrant colors are vital to creating a lasting impression. Stray light in the lens, however, would lead to a brightening of the image, which is particularly visible in shadow areas. Image contrast is lowered; the image appears dull and bleached. We combine various, elaborate techniques to reduce unwanted stray light. For example, all lens elements are coated with the famous ZEISS T*® anti-reflective coating. Additionally, a jet black special paint is applied by hand to all lens element edges to ensure that reflections are prevented from the start.
Precise manual focus
Manually focusing a lens means controlling the image result from your fingertips. A good ergonomic design makes all the difference. ZEISS T* anti-reflective coating
The optical elements of ZEISS lenses feature T*® anti-reflective coating on all surfaces and an optical design that guarantees images of superior brilliance at all times, even in unfavourable lighting conditions. We apply the anti-reflective coating to the lens surfaces by the vapour deposition of extremely thin, transparent layers on the glass. In this process, special substances are vaporized with extremely high energy in a high-vacuum environment and are subsequently deposited on the glass surfaces, one after another, as layers with precisely controlled thicknesses to achieve the desired reduction of reflective properties. The first coating techniques were employed by ZEISS as long ago as in the 1930s.
